Program description

The All of Us Research Program seeks to advance its mission by enabling access to biospecimens stored in the All of Us supported Biobank for researchers to conduct assays to evaluate associations between biomarkers and chronic diseases and add data to the All of Us resource for broad use by researchers. Biomarker analysis includes, but is not limited to, biomarker discovery; biomarker validation; novel disease stratification; and multiomics integration for disease risk, diagnosis, and prognosis, in support of advancing precision medicine. The All of Us Research Program is a historic effort to enroll 1 million participants who share data to accelerate research and medical breakthroughs, and enable individualized prevention, treatment, and care. Researchers use data from the program to learn more about how individual differences in lifestyle, environment, and genetics can influence health and disease.

Grant authorities that allow the All of Us Research Program to forecast this opportunity are as follows: 42 USC 241 and 284.

FAQ

Who can apply for this grant?

Academic institutions, research universities, government labs, and nonprofit research organizations with 501(c)(3) status. Applicants must have institutional research infrastructure and IRB oversight.

What type of research does this support?

Biomedical and translational research using All of Us participant biospecimens and associated health data. Studies analyzing genetic, molecular, or phenotypic data are prioritized.

Is prior All of Us experience required?

Not necessarily. New researchers are encouraged. You should demonstrate capacity to work with protected health information and genomic data.

What budget range should I expect?

Typical NIH R21 and R01 mechanisms range from $100K-$500K annually. Consult the specific funding opportunity announcement for exact limits.

What is the timeline for review and funding?

Standard NIH peer review takes 4-6 months after deadline. If approved, funding typically begins 6-8 months after submission.

💡 Tips for applicants

  • Demonstrate your team's experience with biospecimen handling and genomic analysis. Include relevant publications and preliminary data.
  • Clearly explain how your research uses All of Us data uniquely. Show alignment with All of Us research priorities.
  • Build a collaborative team. Include biostatisticians, clinicians, and data managers as appropriate.
  • Plan for data security and privacy compliance. Detail your IRB and HIPAA protocols upfront.
  • Start early building your All of Us researcher account and accessing the database. Familiarize yourself with available datasets before drafting.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Underestimating complexity of All of Us data access and governance requirements. Not securing institutional commitment and IRB pre-approval before submission. Proposing research scope too broad or unfocused given biospecimen availability constraints.
