Can you apply?

This grant is for researchers and institutions seeking to develop and expand research infrastructure supporting population dynamics studies. The NIH iPOP program supports academic institutions, research hospitals, nonprofit research organizations, and other research-performing organizations. Activities include building computational resources, developing data management systems, creating research cohorts, and establishing epidemiologic survey infrastructure. The program typically requires applicants to demonstrate institutional commitment, research capacity, and a clear research agenda in population dynamics, which encompasses demography, epidemiology, and population-based health research. Geographic scope is nationwide, and both new and experienced research groups are encouraged to apply.

Program description

The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications for research infrastructure support in order to advance the field of NICHD-relevant population dynamics research. Applications are not being solicited at this time. Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. This NOFO will utilize the P2C activity code, which the National Institutes of Health (NIH) uses to support multi-component research resource projects and centers that will enhance the capability of resources to serve biomedical and behavioral research.

FAQ

Who is eligible to apply for iPOP funding?

Academic institutions, research hospitals, nonprofit research organizations, federally qualified health centers (FQHCs), and other research-performing entities are typically eligible. Applicants must have a 501(c)(3) status or be a government agency. Individual researchers should apply through their institutional grants office.

What types of research infrastructure can be supported?

Funding supports development of computational systems, data management platforms, research cohorts, epidemiologic surveys, biobanks, and related population health research infrastructure. The focus is on building capacity for population dynamics research rather than specific research projects.

What is the typical funding level for iPOP?

NIH research infrastructure grants typically range from $100,000 to $1 million annually, though specific amounts vary by project scope. Check the program announcement for current budget guidelines.

When is the application deadline?

The application open date is May 14, 2025. Consult the official NIH website or CFDA listing (93.865) for specific submission deadlines, which may include rolling deadlines or fixed annual dates.

What makes an iPOP application competitive?

Strong applications demonstrate institutional commitment, experienced research teams, clear infrastructure development goals, plans for sustainability, and potential for significant impact on population dynamics research. Evidence of preliminary infrastructure development and user engagement strengthens competitiveness.

💡 Tips for applicants

  • Obtain strong institutional commitment letters demonstrating support for infrastructure maintenance and ongoing costs beyond the grant period; infrastructure sustainability is critical to reviewer evaluation.
  • Develop a detailed data management and governance plan, including security protocols, data sharing agreements, and compliance with HIPAA and other regulations. Reviewers closely examine data stewardship capability.
  • Include letters of support from potential research users (both internal and external) showing documented demand for the infrastructure you plan to build.
  • Budget realistically for personnel, IT infrastructure, cybersecurity, and maintenance. Hidden costs in ongoing operations often undermine infrastructure sustainability.
  • Clearly articulate how your infrastructure will advance the population dynamics field and potentially serve researchers beyond your institution, demonstrating broader impact and justifying public investment.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Applications often fail by underestimating long-term infrastructure costs and failing to demonstrate a sustainable funding plan beyond the grant period. Reviewers are skeptical of infrastructure projects without clear institutional financial commitment. Additionally, applicants frequently lack sufficient detail on data governance, security, and compliance frameworks—these are mandatory components for modern research infrastructure and gaps result in low scores.
