Program description

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) pursues its mission of seeking fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability. Through this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), the participating NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices (ICOs) encourage pursuit of that mission through the submission of investigator-initiated Program Project (P01) applications. With this Parent P01 NOFO, the NIH ICOs intend to support a broadly based, multidisciplinary, often long-term research program with a specific major scientific objective or theme. The proposed Program Project must be related to the programmatic interests of one or more of the participating ICOs based on their scientific missions. Each application submitted in response to this NOFO must consist of at least two research projects and an administrative core. Additionally, a P01 application may include scientific cores, if needed for the proposed research. The projects included within the Program must share a common central scientific theme, focus, and/or an overall objective. Statutory authority: Awards are made under the authorization of Sections 301 and 405 of the Public Health Service Act as amended (42 USC 241 and 284) and under Federal Regulations 42 CFR Part 52 and 2 CFR Part 200.

FAQ

What is a Research Program Project (P01) grant?

A P01 is a team-based research program bringing together multiple linked research projects around a shared scientific goal, with coordinating core facilities and administrative support.

Who is eligible to apply?

Eligible applicants include academic institutions, research hospitals, nonprofit research organizations, and other entities with 501(c)(3) status or government designation, provided they have the institutional infrastructure and capacity to manage multi-project programs.

Are clinical trials supported?

Yes, this is the "Parent P01 Clinical Trial Optional" mechanism, meaning clinical trial components may be included if scientifically justified, though they are not required.

What is the typical funding range?

P01 grants typically fund programs at higher levels than traditional R01 research grants, often in the $500,000–$2,000,000+ range annually depending on the scientific area and complexity, though amounts vary significantly.

How competitive is this mechanism?

P01 grants are highly competitive. Review focuses on innovation, team composition, research significance, and institutional commitment. Strong preliminary data and clear coordination among projects are essential.

💡 Tips for applicants

  • Assemble a strong multidisciplinary research team with established track records and complementary expertise; NIH values demonstrated collaboration and productivity.
  • Clearly articulate how individual projects connect around a unifying scientific theme and how core facilities will enhance all projects.
  • Provide comprehensive preliminary data demonstrating feasibility and that your team is positioned to lead in the field.
  • Detail the administrative and support structure, including the Program Director/Project Director role and governance of the program.
  • Budget realistically for both research projects and shared core facilities; justify all costs and show how they enable the program's scientific aims.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Applications often fail because the individual projects lack sufficient integration and appear as disconnected R01-equivalent studies rather than a genuinely collaborative program with meaningful synergy. Weak or incomplete core facility justification—failing to explain how cores directly enhance multiple projects—is another frequent rejection reason. Finally, insufficient institutional commitment documentation or unclear lines of authority/decision-making in program governance can signal lack of readiness to manage a complex, multi-project award.
