Can you apply?
This grant is for institutions and organizations that develop, maintain, or distribute genomic research resources and tools for the scientific community. Eligible applicants include research institutions, universities, hospitals, and nonprofit research organizations with research capabilities. The program supports infrastructure projects that serve multiple investigators across institutions. Activities include creating databases, establishing tissue repositories, developing bioinformatics platforms, and providing training in genomic methods.
The project must benefit a broad research community and not focus on a single investigator's clinical work. International collaboration is permitted when it strengthens U.S. research capacity. This mechanism prioritizes sustainability and long-term impact on the genomics research landscape.

Program description
The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), with other NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) National Cancer Institute (NCI) and National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications to facilitate genomic research and the dissemination of its products, NHGRI proposes this RFA to support both new and existing genomic resources of demonstrated broad value to the research community. Awards under this NOFO will support the development, curation, and distribution of high-value genomic resources valuable for both basic and clinical genomics research. Applications are not being solicited at this time. Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. This NOFO will utilize the U24 activity code. Investigators with expertise and insights into this area of genomic resource development are encouraged to begin to consider applying for this new NOFO. In addition, collaborative investigations combining expertise in computational genomics and data science and clinical applications of genomics will be encouraged and these investigators should also begin considering applying for this application.

FAQ
What types of institutions can apply?
Research universities, medical centers, nonprofit research organizations, and government laboratories. Your institution must have research infrastructure and organizational capacity to support a resource program.
Can my application include a clinical trial?
No. This program explicitly does not support clinical trials. Focus on tool development, database creation, or resource provision instead.
What counts as a genomic resource?
Databases, tissue/sample repositories, software platforms, bioinformatics tools, and training programs that serve multiple research groups beyond your institution.
How competitive is this grant?
NIH research infrastructure grants are moderately to highly competitive. Strong applications demonstrate clear community need and long-term sustainability plans.
What is the typical funding level?
U24 grants typically range from $250,000 to $600,000 per year. Actual amounts vary based on project scope and agency priorities.
💡 Tips for applicants
- Show clear community demand. Provide letters of support from researchers who will use your resource.
- Develop a realistic sustainability plan. Explain how the resource will remain accessible after grant funding ends.
- Demonstrate technical expertise. Include CVs and publications from your team in relevant genomics areas.
- Define measurable outputs. Specify how many users, datasets, or tools your resource will produce annually.
- Align with NIH priorities. Reference relevant NHGRI or NCCBI strategic plans and ongoing genomics initiatives.
⚠️ Common mistakes
Proposing a resource with uncertain long-term sustainability or unclear path to user adoption. Treating the resource as primarily benefiting your institution rather than serving a broad, external research community.
