Program description

The Office of Data Science Strategy (ODSS) along with other participating institutes and Centers intends to renew the Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) PAR-23-237.

This funding opportunity is intended to provide continuation to support established biomedical data repositories and knowledge bases as distinct and separate resources that have demonstrated impact and have potential for continued benefit to the community served. Applications funded under this NOFO for established data resources must already exist, address the needs of the targeted biomedical research community, document scientific impact they have had thus far, and have potential for continued benefit to the community served.

No applications are being solicited at this time. Given the expiration of PAR-23-237, this notice will allow for potential applicants the opportunity to continue developing high-impact applications to renew funding support for existing high-performing data repositories and knowledge bases.

FAQ

Who can apply for this grant?

Research institutions, universities, hospitals, and nonprofit organizations with established biomedical data resources. Applicants must demonstrate existing infrastructure and user communities.

Can clinical trials be included in the project?

No. This program explicitly excludes clinical trial data as the primary focus. Repositories primarily serving clinical trials are not eligible.

What types of data resources are supported?

Biomedical data repositories, knowledgebases, databases, and related informatics infrastructure. Examples include genomic databases, epidemiological datasets, and clinical registries.

How competitive is this funding?

Highly competitive. Applicants must show strong scientific need, active user communities, and clear sustainability plans for their data resource.

What is the typical funding range?

R24 grants typically range from $200,000 to $500,000 annually, but consult the specific FOA for exact amounts and project period details.

💡 Tips for applicants

  • Emphasize the scientific impact and user base of your data resource. Show which research communities depend on it.
  • Include a detailed sustainability plan. Reviewers want assurance the repository will remain operational beyond the grant period.
  • Provide evidence of data quality, curation standards, and regular updates. Demonstrate active management and improvement.
  • Detail your user engagement strategy. Include letters of support from researchers who actively use your resource.
  • Address data security, privacy, and compliance with HIPAA or other relevant regulations clearly in your application.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Applications fail when they lack evidence of an active user community or clear scientific impact. Weak or vague sustainability plans signal future operational problems. Insufficient detail on data quality control and curation standards undermines reviewer confidence.
