Program Objective
The INCLUDE (INvestigation of Co-occurring conditions across the Lifespan to Understand Down syndromE) Project's mission is to investigate conditions that affect individuals with Down syndrome and the general population. Applying the expertise and resources from multiple NIH Institutes and Centers, the INCLUDE Project supports research and research training to achieve the following objectives: (1) Conduct targeted, high-risk, high-reward basic science studies on chromosome 21; (2) Assemble a large study population of individuals with Down syndrome; (3) Conduct clinical trials research inclusive of individuals with Down syndrome.

How to Apply
Award Procedure
Applications are reviewed for scientific and technical merit by a scientific review group and for program relevance by a national advisory council/board. Grants and cooperative agreements are funded based on scientific merit, program relevance, and program balance and are made annually. The initial grant award provides funds for the first budget period (usually 12 months) and letter Notice of Award indicates support recommended for the remainder of the project period, allocation of Federal funds by budget categories and special conditions, if any. Other Transactions are awarded based on the criteria stated within the research opportunity announcement for each initiative.

Description
The INCLUDE Project launched in June 2018 in support of a Congressional directive in the Fiscal Year 2018 Omnibus Appropriations that called for a new NIH-wide research initiative on critical health and quality-of-life needs for individuals with Down syndrome.
This assistance listing supports research activities including, but not limited to, basic science, cohort development, and clinical trial research; development of shared research resources and infrastructure; data harmonization and analysis; career development and training; and community-engaged research approaches. Projects funded under this listing contribute to a comprehensive research portfolio addressing conditions that affect individuals with Down syndrome and the general population, such as Alzheimer’s disease/dementia, autism, cataracts, celiac disease, congenital heart disease and diabetes.
