Program Objective

To provide a monetary allowance for the purchase of a casket or urn used to inter Veteran remains in VA national or VA-grant -funded cemeteries when there is no next of kin or sufficient resources for a casket or urn.

An individual or entity who purchased the casket or urn for the unclaimed Veteran who was interred in a VA national or VA grant-funded cemetery may apply for the monetary allowance.

Description

VA will provide a monetary allowance for a casket or urn used to inter Veteran remains in VA national or VA-grant-funded cemeteries when there is no next of kin or sufficient resources for a casket or urn. This allowance is payable to the person or entity that pays for the casket or urn if VA determines the veteran is eligible for burial in a VA national cemetery or in a VA grant-funded cemetery. The representative requesting payment of the allowance must certify that the veteran’s next of kin cannot be identified, or is unwilling or unable to assume responsibility for the burial arrangements, that they have followed applicable state or local law relating to the disposition of unclaimed remains, and that sufficient resources are not available to furnish the casket or urn.
