Can you apply?
This grant is for research institutions and organizations that can establish a Tissue Procurement Center for the SMaHT Network. Eligible applicants typically include academic medical centers, hospitals, and research institutions with capacity for human tissue collection and processing.
The Center must procure tissues from at least 50 additional healthy donors (beyond the initial 150) and manage special tissue cohorts for somatic mosaicism research. Applicants must demonstrate expertise in tissue handling, storage, and quality assurance.
Activities supported include tissue collection, processing, characterization, storage, and distribution to other SMaHT Network researchers. Clinical trials are not permitted under this funding mechanism.

Program description
The purpose of the Somatic Mosaicism across Human Tissues (SMaHT) Network is to advance the discovery of biological processes and disease mechanisms mediated by somatic mutations in human tissues.
Since 2023, the program has generated multi-omic somatic mutation datasets from a standardized set of human tissues spanning all three germ layers. Building on the Stage 1 foundation, the NIH intends to issue a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) seeking support for the SMaHT Tissue Procurement Center (TPC) initiative.
The TPC will enable functional analyses of these healthy and clinically relevant tissue samples, providing critical resources to support characterization of somatic mosaicism and its role in human biology and disease. The Tissue Procurement Center will support the Network by collecting, processing, storing, and rapidly distributing high-quality, well-characterized human tissue specimens. Building on the 150 healthy donors enrolled during Stage 1, the TPC will procure tissues from at least 50 additional healthy donors, bringing the total to 200. The TPC will also collect up to 10 special tissue cohorts. The special tissue cohorts may include: tissues that can be grown in culture, tissues that are of high interest for somatic mosaicism studies, clinically relevant samples, organs that require special handling procedures, and other relevant samples. Awardee will collaborate with other SMaHT Stage 2 initiatives to ensure that the samples are sufficient and useful for running production level assays within the program.

FAQ
Who can apply for the SMaHT Tissue Procurement Center grant?
Research institutions with established capacity for human tissue procurement, processing, and storage. Academic medical centers and hospitals with relevant infrastructure are typical applicants.
What are the main responsibilities of the funded center?
Collect tissues from at least 50 additional healthy donors, manage special tissue cohorts, process and characterize samples, and distribute them to other SMaHT Network researchers.
Are clinical trials allowed under this funding mechanism?
No, clinical trials are not permitted. This is a tissue procurement and resource-sharing initiative focused on somatic mosaicism research.
How is the SMaHT Network structured?
The network includes multiple Stage 2 initiatives. The Tissue Procurement Center must collaborate with other initiatives to ensure samples meet production-level assay requirements.
What qualifications should the applicant organization have?
Expertise in human tissue handling, quality assurance protocols, sample storage systems, and ability to manage multi-tissue procurement from diverse donors.
💡 Tips for applicants
- Emphasize your institution's infrastructure for tissue procurement, processing, and long-term storage before applying. Missing this foundation makes applications uncompetitive.
- Show experience managing large donor cohorts and maintaining detailed tissue characterization data. Quality assurance protocols are critical.
- Build clear collaboration plans with other SMaHT Stage 2 initiatives early. Demonstrate how your center will serve the broader network.
- Detail your capacity to procure and manage special tissue cohorts with varying requirements. This flexibility strengthens applications.
- Address sample tracking, quality control, and rapid distribution logistics explicitly. Reviewers assess operational readiness carefully.
⚠️ Common mistakes
Applications fail when applicants lack documented tissue procurement infrastructure or cannot demonstrate prior success managing large donor cohorts. Insufficient detail on quality assurance and sample characterization protocols weakens competitiveness significantly. Weak collaboration plans with other SMaHT initiatives show misunderstanding of the network's interdependent structure.
