Can you apply?

This grant is for counties and reservations in Montana seeking funding for noxious weed management projects. Eligible counties must meet the 1.6 mills financial requirement under Montana law, have a current weed management plan on file, and maintain an active noxious weed program.

Eligible reservations must submit their weed management plan or indicate adoption of the county plan. This funding supplements local budgets—it does not replace existing county or reservation funding for weed control.

Eligible activities include unique or specific weed control projects and capital improvements beyond normal program scope. Counties and reservations may apply for additional cooperative, educational, or research grants through the same program.

Program description

Noxious Weed Trust Fund County/Reservation Program Enhancement Grant Applications – Due by January 6, 2027 The county/reservation noxious weed program grants are designed to help counties and reservations accomplish unique or specific weed control activities and/or capital improvement projects for their weed programs beyond the scope of the normal county or reservation budgets. The intent of these grants are not to replace existing local noxious weed funding, but to supplement the county or reservation funding to improve weed management. Funding for the County/Reservation Program Enhancement grants is set at $7,500 per county or reservation. Name your Project Title as follows: (YOUR COUNTY/RESERVATION NAME) 2027 County/Reservation Program Grant To be eligible for these grants, counties must meet the 1.6 mills or equivalent financial requirements as set forth in 80-7-814, MCA, have a current noxious weed management plan on file with the Montana Department of Agriculture, and have an active noxious weed program. Reservations should submit their weed management plan or indicate if they follow the county weed management plan. Receipt of these specific grants does not limit the county or reservation from making application for additional cooperative, educational, or research grants through the Montana Noxious Weed Trust Fund grants program. Additional information can be found in the Noxious Weed Trust Fund Grant Guidelines and on the Montana Department of Agriculture website .

💡 Tips for applicants

  • Name your project title exactly as instructed: "(YOUR COUNTY/RESERVATION NAME) 2027 County/Reservation Program Grant."
  • Confirm your county meets the 1.6 mills financial requirement before applying. Check with your local auditor if unsure.
  • Have your current noxious weed management plan ready. Reservations should clarify whether they use their own or the county plan.
  • Use the funding to supplement, not replace, existing budgets. Emphasize how the $7,500 enables new or expanded activities.
  • Review the Noxious Weed Trust Fund Grant Guidelines on the Montana Department of Agriculture website for additional requirements or forms.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Applying without meeting the 1.6 mills financial requirement or active program status. Requesting funding to replace existing local weed control budgets rather than supplement them. Proposing activities already covered by routine county operations.
