Program Objective

With this program, SAMHSA aims to reduce the incidence and/or the duration of psychiatric hospitalization, homelessness, incarcerations, and interaction with the criminal justice system while improving the health and social outcomes of individuals with SMI.

Eligibility

Eligible Applicants

  • Local

states, counties, cities mental health systems (including state mental health authorities), mental health courts, or any other entity with authority under the law of the state in which the applicant grantee is located to implement, monitor, and oversee AOT programs.

Applications are awarded directly by SAMHSA to the applicant organization after a number of considerations, including but not limited to merit review, and program analysis.

Description

The purpose of this program is to facilitate the implementation of Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) for adults with serious mental illness (SMI). Recipients are expected to implement the AOT program, working with civil courts, community partners, and other entities to support community-based treatment for adults with SMI who meet criteria for AOT. SAMHSA’s AOT grant program supports E.O. 14321 by expanding access to assisted outpatient treatment and civil commitment services.
