FY2025 The Screening and Treatment for Maternal Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders (MMHSUD) program supports 13 states to expand health care providers’ capacity to screen assess, treat and refer pregnant and postpartum women for mental health and substance use disorders (SUD). As of December 2025, 10 states have active teleconsultation phone lines to support perinatal providers with information and psychiatric consultation. All 13 states conduct trainings on mental health and SUD screening, assessment, and treatment for perinatal providers and care coordination services (for example, referrals for treatment and for other community-based resources like peer support groups, housing support, or education).

Program Objective

The Screening and Treatment for Maternal Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders (MMHSUD) program aims to expand health care providers’ capacity to screen, assess, treat, and refer pregnant and postpartum women for maternal mental health and substance use disorders. This is accomplished by establishing, improving, and/or maintaining statewide, tribal, or regional networks that provide real-time psychiatric consultation, care coordination support services, and culturally and linguistically appropriate training to maternity care providers and clinical practices.

How to Apply

Award Procedure

All qualified applications will be forwarded to an objective review committee. Based on the recommendations of the objective review committee, the HRSA program official with delegated authority is responsible for final selection and funding decisions. Notification is made in writing by a Notice of Award.

Decision Timeline

  • Approval: From 120 to 180 days

Final decisions are made 4 to 6 months after receipt of applications.
