Program Objective

To renovate existing research facilities and build new research facilities to meet basic and clinical space requirements, laboratory safety, biohazard containment, and animal care standards in order to support the facility demands of NIH research programs.

Eligible Applicants

  • Nonprofit Organization

Public/state controlled Nonprofit Institutions/Organizations; Private Institutions of Higher Education; Nonprofit other than Institutions of Higher Education; Nonprofits with 501(c)(3) IRS status (Other than Institutions of Higher Education); and Nonprofits without 501(c)(3) IRS Status (Other than Institutions of Higher Education). Foreign organizations are not eligible

Award Procedure

Applications are reviewed for scientific and technical merit by a scientific review group. Each application is given a peer evaluation for merit, and recommendations are forwarded to the NIH Council of Councils for final review and recommendation.

ORIP advances the NIH mission by supporting infrastructure for innovation. This support is focused on research resources, including research models for human diseases, cutting-edge scientific instrumentation, construction and modernization of research facilities, and research training opportunities for veterinary scientists.

Use of Funds

Allowed Uses

New physical resources for research include basic research laboratories, clinical and support facilities, and those related to biohazard control that are integral parts of an overall effort. Proposed facilities must be part of an existing research effort or a developing research program. Facilities shall be used for research pertinent to the NIH mission for as long as needed. The usual period of Federal interest is 10 or 20 years. Funds must be used for purposes stated in the approved grant application.

Required Documentation

Application should include a complete research program description (with staff curricula vitae), space requirements for projected program, a summary of the environmental impact of the proposed facility as detailed in Public Law 90- 190, the National Environmental Policy Act, and listing of all relevant licenses, permits, or other approvals required by State and local authorities.
