Opal Creek Wilderness Economic Grant Program
Funded Projects
Examples of what this program has supported.
Marion County applied for an ODOT Refinement Grant to fund a comprehensive feasibility study and design for the Minto Park segment and future trail phases extending to Mill City.
Community engagement has been a priority, with local input helping shape the vision for a trail that connects people with nature and supports regional recreation.
Internal coordination between county departments has ensured that resources are aligned to maximize the impact of the Forest Service grant.
These efforts position the project for significant progress in the coming year, with planning and design work paving the way for future construction and expanded trail access.

Program details & compliance
Description
In 2020 the Santiam Canyon communities were devastated by the impacts of the Beachie Creek & Lionshead fires, burning 193,573 and 204,469 acres respectively. These fires caused unimaginable damage to the tight-knit communities already dealing with the unique development challenges of the Santiam Canyon. After the 2020 wildfires, the Santiam Canyon community began the long and arduous process of rebuilding. The goal of this program is to provide funding to the State of Oregon to establish an economic development grant program to help rural communities in the North Santiam Canyon as authorized in the Opal Creek Wilderness Act.
