Program description
The overall goal of this NOFO is to solicit applications to create a national network of Children’s Environmental Health Research Translation Centers (CEHRT). Through external collaboration with the children’s environmental health community, the Centers will protect and improve children’s health by developing and testing new scientific questions and public health interventions/strategies with an eye towards translation; and mentoring a pipeline of new investigators interested in translational Children’s Environmental Health (CEH). The CEHRT Centers will serve as national leaders in CEH translational research and research methodology development, with a focus on creating actionable steps to move evidence-informed biomedical children’s environmental health research findings to the wider community of practice to protect children from harm and to ensure a healthy future. The CEHRT program will also serve as a national research resource to support response efforts to emerging environmental exposures affecting children.

FAQ
Who is eligible to apply for this grant?
Institutions with research capacity in children's environmental health and ability to establish a national center are eligible. Contact your NIH grants office to confirm your organization's eligibility status.
What is the funding range and timeline?
Awards typically range from $500,000 to $750,000. The deadline is March 2, 2027, and project duration is typically 5 years.
What activities does this grant support?
The grant supports translational research, development of public health interventions, mentoring of new investigators, and serving as a national resource for emerging environmental health issues affecting children.
How competitive is this funding?
This is a competitive national program. Strong applications emphasize existing research capacity, community partnerships, and clear translation pathways from research to public health practice.
What is the review focus?
Reviewers prioritize scientific innovation, capacity for mentoring, partnerships with public health practitioners, and potential impact on children's environmental health nationally.
💡 Tips for applicants
- Build your application around a clear translation pathway from research findings to public health practice and community use.
- Demonstrate strong partnerships with children's environmental health practitioners, agencies, and community organizations external to your institution.
- Highlight your institution's existing research infrastructure, funding history, and publications in children's environmental health.
- Develop a robust mentoring plan showing how your center will train the next generation of translational researchers.
- Use your specific environmental health focus (e.g., air quality, water contaminants, climate) to differentiate your center within the national network.
⚠️ Common mistakes
Applications that focus only on basic research without clear translation plans to public health practice often score lower. Centers must show specific mechanisms for moving evidence to practitioners, not just conducting studies. Weak external partnerships or insufficient community engagement makes it difficult to demonstrate translation impact.
