Program description

The NIDDK, intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications for research on collecting and analyzing data from clinical trials involving isolated human islets as a treatment for diabetes.  This data will be used by research community for publications and presentations and to help design future clinical trials.  Additionally, CITR will prepare periodic reports summarizing islet transplantation outcomes and trends overs time to inform the public. Additionally, CITR will conduct periodic meetings of the contributing sites. Applications are not being solicited currently. Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.  This NOFO will utilize the {U01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed Cooperative Agreement} activity code. Investigators with expertise and insights into this area of {Clinical Trial Data Collection} are encouraged to begin to consider applying for this new NOFO. In addition, collaborative investigations combining expertise in {Data Analyses} will be encouraged and these investigators should also begin considering applying for this NOFO.

FAQ

Who can apply for this grant?

Universities, medical schools, hospitals, and research institutions with active islet transplantation programs can apply. You must have institutional capacity to participate in registry activities.

What activities does this fund support?

This funds registry data collection, management, and analysis related to islet transplantation outcomes. It does not support new clinical trial initiation.

Is this a clinical trial grant?

No. The U01 clinical trial mechanism is explicitly not allowed. This funds observational registry work only.

What is the competitive landscape?

Competition is typically moderate to strong since awards go to established centers with existing islet transplant programs. Demonstrated track record in registry participation helps.

What is the typical award size?

NIH U01 registry continuation grants typically range from $200K-$500K annually, but check the specific NOFO for exact funding details.

💡 Tips for applicants

  • Emphasize your institution's islet transplant expertise and current patient volume or partnerships.
  • Highlight past registry participation and data quality contributions if applicable.
  • Clearly describe your data management infrastructure and quality assurance processes.
  • Address how you will recruit and retain transplant recipients for follow-up data collection.
  • Align your proposed work with current NIH islet transplant research priorities and outcomes of interest.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Proposing new clinical trial activities. This registry grant explicitly excludes U01 clinical trial mechanisms. Lack of documented islet transplant program or patient population. Many applications fail due to insufficient institutional capacity or patient access.
