💡 Tips for applicants
- Start by reviewing HRSA's cooperative agreement requirements. These grants involve ongoing partnership with federal staff, so clarify reporting expectations early.
- Emphasize your organization's track record serving rural communities. HRSA values demonstrated experience in remote or underserved areas.
- Show how your technical assistance will reach multiple rural sites or communities. Broad impact and scalability are competitive advantages.
- Build relationships with rural partner organizations before you apply. Letters of commitment strengthen your application significantly.
- Detail your evaluation plan upfront. HRSA expects funded programs to measure outcomes and share lessons learned with the field.
⚠️ Common mistakes
Underestimating the rural focus—applications must demonstrate deep understanding of rural barriers to addiction services. Submitting a generic substance abuse proposal without rural-specific strategies typically fails. Failing to show how you'll sustain relationships with multiple rural communities long-term weakens competitiveness.
