Can you apply?

This grant is for academic medical centers, research institutions, and healthcare organizations seeking to establish or maintain a resource-based center focused on skin biology and disease research. Applicants must be domestic institutions (U.S. based) with research capabilities, institutional commitment, and infrastructure to support a multidisciplinary skin research program. The P30 mechanism supports research centers that provide shared resources, research support services, and scientific leadership to advance dermatological and skin-related research. Clinical trials are not allowed as primary activities. Organizations must demonstrate strong institutional support, experienced leadership, and capacity to serve both intramural researchers and external investigators.

Program description

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications for Resource-based centers to provide critical research infrastructure, shared facilities, services, and resources to groups of investigators conducting research on skin diseases research. This will enable them to conduct individual or team-based science research projects more efficiently and effectively. The overall goal is to accelerate, enrich, and enhance the effectiveness of ongoing basic, translational, and clinical research and promote new research within the NIAMS mission.

Applications are not being solicited at this time. This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. Investigators with expertise and insights into this area of skin diseases research are encouraged to begin to consider applying for this new NOFO. In addition, collaborative investigations combining expertise in skin diseases research will be encouraged, and these investigators should also begin considering applying for this application.

FAQ

Who is eligible to apply for this P30 grant?

Research institutions, medical schools, universities, and healthcare organizations with established research programs and infrastructure to support skin biology and disease research. Applicants must be domestic institutions and have institutional commitment to the center's mission.

What is the primary purpose of a P30 resource-based center?

P30 centers provide shared resources, facilities, research support services, and scientific coordination to advance research within a specific scientific area. In this case, centers focus on skin biology, diseases, and related dermatological research.

Are clinical trials allowed as primary activities under this grant?

No. This specific P30 does not allow clinical trials as primary activities. Centers must focus on basic and translational research infrastructure and services supporting skin research.

What types of shared resources might a skin research center provide?

Typical resources include specialized laboratories, equipment access, biospecimen repositories, specialized equipment for skin imaging or analysis, research protocols development support, and technical training for investigators.

What should I expect regarding funding levels and project period?

P30 centers typically receive multi-year funding ($200,000-$500,000+ annually depending on center scope) for 5-year project periods. Specific amounts vary based on institutional needs and proposed center activities.

💡 Tips for applicants

  • Clearly articulate your center's unique scientific focus within skin biology and disease research, explaining how it fills a gap in the research landscape and serves a clear scientific community.
  • Provide strong evidence of institutional commitment including letters of support from leadership, demonstrated financial contributions, and commitment to sustaining the center infrastructure.
  • Develop a detailed resource inventory showing what shared facilities, equipment, and services the center will provide, with clear procedures for internal and external researcher access.
  • Assemble a strong, experienced leadership team with recognized expertise in dermatological research and demonstrated ability to manage research centers and coordinate multidisciplinary programs.
  • Describe a robust strategic plan for center development including specific aims, milestones, evaluation metrics, and how the center will track its impact on advancing skin research productivity.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Applicants often fail to provide compelling evidence of institutional commitment and fail to clearly distinguish how their proposed center differs from or complements existing centers. Another common issue is underestimating the importance of developing a detailed resource-sharing plan with clear access procedures, service delivery timelines, and capacity projections for serving both internal and external users.
