Program description

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) intends to promote a new initiative by publishing a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to renew the Genomics Research to Elucidate the Genetics of Rare Disease (GREGoR) program. The renewal, called GREGoR: Innovation (GREGoRi), seeks to accelerate a paradigm shift in rare disease diagnosis by reimagining the tools, molecular technologies and analytical approaches used to identify the causal gene(s) and/or variant(s) underlying rare genetic disorders. The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity is to establish the GREGoRi Data Coordination and Outreach Center. The Data Coordination and Outreach Center will act as the central point of coordination for the GREGoRi Research Program, and will be responsible for ensuring that the data, metadata, computational tools and other protocols developed as part of GREGoRi are made available to the broader research community.

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. The NOFO is expected to be published in 2025 with an expected application due date in 2026. This NOFO will utilize the U01 activity code.

💡 Tips for applicants

  • Emphasize your institution's data management infrastructure and proven ability to coordinate multi-site research networks.
  • Include letters of support from participating institutions showing commitment to the network's success.
  • Detail your outreach strategy for engaging diverse research participants and community stakeholders.
  • Highlight your team's prior experience managing large datasets and conducting rigorous data quality assurance.
  • Clearly distinguish data coordination activities from clinical trial conduct, which is not eligible.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Applications fail when data management plans lack sufficient detail or institutional commitment is unclear. Proposals proposing clinical trials as core activities are ineligible and rejected. Weak outreach strategies or insufficient community engagement planning reduce competitiveness significantly.
