Program description
This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is one of three NOFOs for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP). NCORP is designed to enhance generalizability and dissemination of clinical trial results through accrual in a variety of community settings. The purpose of NCORP is to engage cancer patient populations, those at risk of cancer, and organizations in rigorous studies focused on cancer control, prevention, treatment and care delivery.
NCORP will support the following components that will be individually awarded through the respective RFAs indicated below:
- NCORP Research Bases (UG1 Clinical Trials Required);
- NCORP Community Sites (UG1 Clinical Trials Not Allowed); and
- NCORP Academic Community Sites (UG1 Clinical Trials Not Allowed)
NCORP Community Sites are consortia of community hospitals and/or oncology practices, which may or may not be formally affiliated in a healthcare system, that accrues participants to cancer control, prevention, treatment and care delivery clinical trials and other human subjects research.
NCORP Community Sites are expected to meet or exceed the required annual 70 new unique patient/participant accruals evenly distributed between cancer control, prevention, and screening/post-treatment surveillance trials, and treatment and imaging trials, respectively. Participation in cancer care delivery studies will be optional. For those who propose cancer care delivery participation, NCORP Community Sites must meet or exceed the required minimum of 3 cancer care delivery protocols open per year. NCORP Community Sites interact with the NCORP Research Bases by: 1) providing insight into clinical significance during concept development; 2) identifying care disparities in their local populations that could be studied; and 3) providing input on feasibility during protocol development.

FAQ
Who is eligible to apply for NCORP Community Sites funding?
Consortia of community hospitals and/or oncology practices are eligible. Applicants must commit to accruing 70+ new patient/participants annually across specified cancer research areas.
What are the accrual requirements?
Sites must accrue at least 70 new unique participants per year, evenly distributed between cancer control/prevention/screening trials and treatment/imaging trials. Cancer care delivery participation is optional but requires 3+ open protocols annually if proposed.
Can my organization conduct clinical trials as a NCORP Community Site?
Yes. Sites accrue participants to cancer control, prevention, treatment, and care delivery trials. However, this NOFO is specifically for sites where clinical trials are not required as the primary focus.
What is the funding amount and project duration?
The total funding pool is $73 million. Specific award amounts and project duration will be detailed in the full NOFO when released.
What collaboration is expected?
NCORP Community Sites must interact with NCORP Research Bases on concept development, identifying local care disparities, and providing feasibility input during protocol development.
💡 Tips for applicants
- Demonstrate your organization's capacity to meet the 70 annual patient/participant accrual target across specified research categories.
- Document your consortia structure and relationships between community hospitals and/or oncology practices.
- Detail how you will identify and address cancer care disparities in your local population through research partnerships.
- Develop a realistic plan for engaging NCORP Research Bases throughout concept, protocol development, and feasibility phases.
- Emphasize your experience accruing diverse patient populations to cancer research studies in community settings.
⚠️ Common mistakes
Underestimating accrual capacity and failing to demonstrate credible plans to meet 70 annual participant targets. Proposing clinical trials as a primary focus when this NOFO specifically excludes UG1 Clinical Trial Required components. Neglecting to outline clear collaboration pathways with NCORP Research Bases during protocol development phases.
