Can you apply?
This grant is for international organizations and U.S. entities working on antimicrobial resistance (AR), healthcare-associated infections (HAI), and emerging infectious disease threats in low and middle-income countries. Applicants must align with CDC's global health priorities and demonstrate capacity to implement surveillance, prevention, and response systems. The grant supports both implementation work and targeted research addressing bacterial, fungal, and viral pathogens across healthcare, community, and environmental settings.
Previous awardees or organizations already collaborating with CDC's Global AR Laboratory and Response Network may have a competitive advantage. U.S. universities, nonprofits, government agencies, and international organizations are typically eligible. Foreign governmental health ministries and NGOs may also apply as direct applicants or partners.

Program description
The proposed international hybrid Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) will link non-research implementation with targeted research that advances CDC’s mission to address antimicrobial resistance (AR) across multiple bacterial and fungal pathogens, healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), and emerging infectious disease threats including viral pathogens across healthcare, community, and environmental settings in low and middle-income countries. AR and HAI remain urgent global threats, with substantial mortality and economic impact. Building on CDC’s Global AR Laboratory and Response Network, HAI surveillance and prevention networks, and other collaborating programs, the NOFO seeks to strengthen detection, surveillance, prevention, and response systems to reduce illness and death, stop the spread of AR, protect healthcare workers and patients, and lower costs through robust infection prevention and control (IPC) and antimicrobial stewardship.

💡 Tips for applicants
- Link your proposed work directly to CDC's Global AR Laboratory and Response Network or existing HAI surveillance partnerships to show alignment with funded infrastructure.
- Emphasize infection prevention and control (IPC) and antimicrobial stewardship as core components of your implementation and research strategy.
- Address the economic and mortality burden of AR and HAI in your target country or region with specific epidemiological data.
- Include clear roles for healthcare workers, patients, and community stakeholders in your surveillance and prevention activities.
- Demonstrate institutional capacity and prior experience working in low and middle-income country settings, ideally in the region you propose to serve.
⚠️ Common mistakes
Applications fail when they focus only on research without implementation or don't clearly connect to CDC's existing global AR and HAI networks. Proposals that lack specific epidemiological data or don't address infection prevention and control as a core strategy are often rejected. Poor explanation of how the work will reduce healthcare-associated infections or AR transmission in realistic settings also weakens applications.
