Program description

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to invite NIH Stage Model Stage II-V research applications focused on the development of behavioral interventions for persons living with Alzheimer’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD) and/or their care partners or caregivers. Awards made through this NOFO will support a milestone-driven planning phase for up to two years, with possible transition to a clinical trial phase pending successful completion of the required milestones. The intervention(s) to be tested as part of this NOFO are expected to be in a developed and testable form, with Stage I activities completed prior to the proposed work. Applications are not being solicited at this time. Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. This NOFO intends to utilize the R61/R33 activity code. Investigators with expertise and insights into this area of aging research are encouraged to begin to consider applying for this new NOFO.

Behavioral interventions for persons with dementia and/or their caregivers. The intervention must be developed and testable, not in early conceptual stages.

What is the funding structure?

Up to two years of planning/validation funding with possible transition to a clinical trial phase upon successful milestone completion. The R61/R33 activity code is used.

When is the deadline?

Applications are not currently being solicited. This NOFO will open in the future; watch NIA announcements for the formal opening date.

Is cost sharing required?

No, cost sharing is not required for this grant.

💡 Tips for applicants

  • Start planning your Stage II activities now. Ensure your Stage I work is thoroughly documented and published or presented to demonstrate readiness.
  • Identify strong collaborators with caregiving expertise. Interventions must address real needs of both patients and care partners.
  • Plan realistic milestones for the two-year planning phase. The transition to clinical trials depends on meeting these benchmarks.
  • Build relationships with patient and caregiver advisory boards early. Their input strengthens both research design and likelihood of adoption.
  • Review the NIH Stage Model framework carefully. Your application must clearly align with Stage II-V activities, not earlier development work.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Applying without completed Stage I work. Proposing interventions that are still in conceptual or early development stages. Underestimating the importance of caregiver input and engagement in intervention design.
