Program description

The National Institute on Aging intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications for the Coordinating Center (CC) of the Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Centers (OAIC) program. The CC serves as a facilitator for OAIC site interactions and as a conduit for translating OAIC objectives and findings to both scientific and general audiences. The proposed CC must demonstrate an ability to work cooperatively with all OAIC sites and possess sufficient scientific expertise in geriatrics and related areas to serve the national coordination functions of the OAIC program. Applicants should have a demonstrated ability to coordinate multi-site projects.

Applications are not being solicited at this time. Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. This NOFO will utilize the U24 activity code. Investigators with expertise and insights into this area of aging research are encouraged to begin to consider applying for this new NOFO.

Institutions with geriatrics expertise and proven ability to coordinate multi-site research projects. Experience managing collaborations across multiple OAIC sites is essential.

What is the main role of the Coordinating Center?

The CC facilitates interactions between OAIC sites and translates research findings to scientific and general audiences. It serves as the primary administrative hub for network coordination.

What type of activity code does this grant use?

This NOFO uses the U24 activity code, which designates it as a cooperative agreement and coordination center award. Standard NIH terms apply.

When is the application deadline?

The deadline is May 25, 2027. This is a fixed deadline, not rolling acceptance.

How competitive is this award?

Competition is likely high due to the specialized nature of the Coordinating Center role. Strong geriatrics credentials and demonstrated multi-site coordination experience are critical competitive advantages.

💡 Tips for applicants

  • Highlight your institution's existing geriatrics research infrastructure and expertise. Show established relationships with multiple aging research centers or institutions.
  • Emphasize your track record coordinating multi-site projects. Include specific examples of successful collaborative research management and communication protocols.
  • Address how your center will facilitate knowledge translation. Explain your plan to disseminate OAIC findings to both researchers and the public.
  • Demonstrate scientific leadership in aging research. Include senior investigators with recognized expertise in geriatrics and age-related health conditions.
  • Build preliminary partnerships with current or prospective OAIC sites before submitting. Letters of support showing collaborative commitment strengthen competitiveness.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Underestimating the importance of multi-site coordination experience; applications lacking proven ability to manage complex collaborative networks often lack competitiveness. Focusing too narrowly on research only without explaining how findings will be translated and disseminated to multiple audiences. Proposing a Coordinating Center without strong preliminary evidence of OAIC site buy-in or letters of institutional support.
