Program description
The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications for access to a state-of-the-art Biological Testing Facility (BTF) for advancing both contraceptive and reproductive health-related product development. There is a critical need for fertility regulation methods that fit the needs of women and men throughout their reproductive lives, and it is also essential to support the development of new therapies related to reproductive health. Investigators with innovative and validated methods for future clinical development are encouraged to consider applying for this NOFO. This opportunity will use the X01 activity code, which the National Institutes of Health (NIH) uses to invite eligible institutions to seek access to NIH research resources. Grant authorities that allow the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to forecast this opportunity are as follows: Public Health Service Act, Section 301, 448 and 487, as amended, Public Laws 78-410 and 99-158, as amended, 42 U.S.C. 241; 42 U.S.C. 285g; 42 U.S.C. 288; Small Business Research and Development Enhancement Act of 1992, Public Law 102-564, Public Law 118-47.
Applications are not being solicited at this time. Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop responsive projects.

FAQ
What is the X01 activity code used for this grant?
The X01 code allows the NIH to invite eligible institutions to access specialized NIH research resources and facilities. This grant provides access to a state-of-the-art Biological Testing Facility rather than project-based funding.
Who can apply for access to the BTF?
Institutions with investigators developing innovative contraceptive or reproductive health products ready for clinical development. The research must use validated methods and address genuine fertility regulation or reproductive health needs.
What types of research does this support?
Contraceptive development, reproductive health therapies, and fertility regulation methods for women and men. Research must be directed toward future clinical development.
When is the application deadline?
The deadline is January 5, 2026. Applications are not being solicited at this time, but the notice is published to allow preparation time.
What budget components are allowed?
This is a facility access grant, not a traditional project grant. Budget details will be specified in the full Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) when applications open.
💡 Tips for applicants
- Start preparing your research plan now. The notice provides time to develop a strong application before the January 2026 deadline.
- Emphasize innovation and validation. Your methods must be innovative and already validated to be competitive.
- Clearly connect to clinical development. Show how facility access will move your research toward clinical trials.
- Describe the gap your research fills. Explain the unmet need in contraceptive or reproductive health your work addresses.
- Review the full NOFO carefully. The complete Notice of Funding Opportunity will contain specific technical and operational requirements for BTF access.
⚠️ Common mistakes
Applying with preliminary or unvalidated methods. The BTF supports research ready for clinical development, not early-stage exploratory work. Failing to address a specific reproductive health need or unmet clinical gap. Vague descriptions of how facility access will advance your product development timeline.
