Program Objective

The Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) projects for regional and national significance support states, tribes and communities through grants and cooperative agreements. CMHS supports prevention, treatment, and recovery for Americans with mental health conditions. CMHS aims to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals, families, and communities; and for all people to live fulfilling, independent, and productive lives. This is achieved through (1) knowledge development and application projects for prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation, and the conduct or support of evaluations of such projects; (2) training and technical assistance programs; (3) targeted capacity response programs; and (4) systems change grants including statewide family network grants and client-oriented and consumer run self-help activities, which may include technical assistance centers.

Domestic private and public non-profit organizations, including faith-based organizations; Public organizations; States (including the District of Columbia, U.S. Territories, and Pacific Jurisdictions); Political sub-divisions of States; Consortia of political subdivisions of States; Public or private institutions of higher education; Indian tribes or tribal organizations (as defined in Section 5304 of Title 25); Federally recognized Tribal governments; Health facilities and hospitals; Programs operated in accordance with a contract or award with the Indian Health Service; State or local education agency; Tribal education agency

Award Procedure

Applications are awarded directly by SAMHSA to the applicant organization after a number of considerations, including but not limited to merit review, program analysis, and concurrence by the CMHS National Advisory Council.
