Program Objective

This program assists the Denali Commission in lowering the cost of energy for families and individuals in areas with extremely high per-household energy costs (275% of the national average or higher). Funds may be used to finance energy generation, transmission and distribution initiatives to assist with equalizing household energy costs in areas where local conditions cause higher than national average energy costs.

Eligibility

Eligible Applicants

The Denali Commission, a Federal Agency, is the only eligible applicant.

Beneficiaries

  • Unrestricted by Entity Type

Beneficiaries are residents of rural communities in Alaska with extremely high energy costs. Eligible beneficiary communities must apply for assistance directly to the Denali Commission and eligible projects must be on Denali Commission Annual Approved Work Plan.

How to Apply

Application Procedure

A letter request from the Denali Commission to the Administrator of the USDA Rural Utilities Service is the first step.

Award Procedure

Approval of the Denali Commission request for grant funds is made by the Administrator in his sole discretion.

Use of Funds

Allowed Uses

Funds must be used for energy generation, transmission, or distribution facilities serving communities where annual average residential energy expenditures are at least 275 percent of the national average. Grant must be in coordination with State rural development initiatives. Planning and administrative expenses must not exceed 4 percent of the grant amount.

Restrictions

Funding is restricted to investments in energy infrastructure.
