Program Objective
To ensure that all meat, poultry, and egg products produced in plants and shipped in commerce are safe, wholesome, and accurately labeled. Its purpose is to protect public health by enforcing strict standards for food safety, proper labeling, and humane handling during slaughter and processing.

Award Procedure
Certification is made that the applicant meets the regulations on sanitation, and operating standards for the inspection of meat, poultry and egg products plant facilities and equipment.

Description
The program serves meat and poultry plants, egg product processors, and ultimately consumers by guaranteeing that products entering interstate and international commerce meet federal requirements. What makes it unique is its mandatory federal oversight, comprehensive scope covering meat, poultry, and egg products, and its authority under multiple laws, including the Federal Meat Inspection Act, Poultry Products Inspection Act, Egg Products Inspection Act, and Humane Slaughter Act.

Use of Funds
Allowed Uses
Meat, poultry, and egg products plants located within the United States or its Territories engaged in slaughtering or processing meat, poultry, and egg products for shipment in commerce are required to have inspection. All plants located within the U.S. or its territories processing egg products are required to be under continuous USDA inspection. The Department of Agriculture is reimbursed for overtime and holiday inspection services. Inspection not required under law is provided on request for a fee.
Restrictions
Funding may not be used for Construction or Research purposes. Federal funding also may not be used for Employee Terminal Leave.
Required Documentation
Parties interested in joining 10.477 programs must have an "at least equal to" inspection program as defined in 10.475.
Matching Requirements
Federal Funding is provided at up to 50 percent of the eligible program costs for Talmadge Aiken. States in the program must fund at least 50 percent of eligible costs.
Federal Funding is provided at 60 percent of the eligible program costs for Cooperative Interstate Shipment. States in the program must fund at least 40 percent of eligible costs.
