FY2025 1) Restoring Historic Landmarks: Historic homes, churches, and civic buildings have been preserved through roof repairs, masonry restoration, and structural stabilization. 2) Revitalizing Museums and Cultural Institutions: Maritime museums, art institutions, and cultural centers have used funds to conserve, protect and display national treasures. 3) Reopening Community Spaces: Funding has helped revive opera houses, libraries, and town halls, turning them into vibrant community hubs once again. 4) Preserving Stories and Collections: Projects have included the preservation of early American manuscripts, architectural drawings, and indigenous artifacts. 5) Protecting the Past, Building the Future: Projects have included accessibility upgrades, fire safety improvements, and energy-efficient systems, ensuring historic sites are safe and welcoming for all.

Program Objective

To provide matching grants for preservation or conservation work on nationally significant intellectual and cultural artifacts and nationally significant historic structures and sites. Intellectual and cultural artifacts include artifacts, collections, documents, sculpture and works of art.

State and Local agencies, Public or Private nonprofit institutions/organizations, State Colleges and Universities, Public and Private Colleges and Universities, Federally Recognized Indian Tribes, and Federal agencies funded by the Department of the Interior and Related Agencies with the exception of the National Park Service.

Individuals are not eligible applicants.

Properties receiving Save America's Treasures
(SAT) grant assistance must be listed in the National Register of Historic Places for National significance

Application Procedure

Funding announcements for this program, along with registration procedures, application packages and instructions, points of contact, and procedures for submitting applications will be available on www.grants.gov

Award Procedure

Proposals received in response announcements on grants.gov are reviewed in a competitive, merit-based review process, and are rated in accordance with the evaluation criteria stated in the announcement. Funding recommendations are made for the highest rated proposals based on the amount of funding available each year. Final awards are decided through SOI and Congressional review as per the authorizing legislations.

On average applications are reviewed and funding recommendations made in 60-90 days. This varies based on the number of applications. There is no mandated time. Approval of funding recommendations once submitted average 30-90 days until announcement of funding.

Use of Funds

Allowed Uses

Funds may be used for projects resulting in the protection and preservation of nationally significant historic structures and sites, as well as nationally significant collections of cultural artifacts, documents, sculpture and works of art. Projects must comply with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation. No funding is given to projects dealing with acquisition or reconstruction of properties or collections, payment of rent on properties or land, fund-raising, or lobbying. Grantee must execute a preservation easement or preservation agreement for each grant-assisted historic site to the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) for at least 50 years from the end date of the grant agreement.

Matching Requirements

Matching requirement: 50% non federal recipient cost share is required under this program.
