💡 Tips for applicants

  • Engage Tribal leadership and community members early in planning. Their input strengthens your application and implementation.
  • Document your organization's capacity to implement Zero Suicide framework components. Show readiness in risk identification, assessment, and treatment systems.
  • Emphasize cultural competency and community-informed approaches. One-size-fits-all suicide prevention fails in Tribal contexts.
  • Build partnerships with existing suicide prevention efforts. Show how your project complements and strengthens current work.
  • Address workforce capacity realistically. Include training plans for staff unfamiliar with Zero Suicide framework or evidence-based practices.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Overlooking Tribal consultation requirements. Applications must show genuine community engagement, not just compliance checkboxes. Applying generic suicide prevention approaches instead of culturally adapted Zero Suicide strategies specific to AI/AN populations. Underestimating implementation challenges like staff turnover, limited resources, or geographic barriers in delivering care continuity.
