This is a project to evaluate Produce Safety University and provide evidence-based feedback to enhance the delivery and impact of the program. The awardee is currently conducting evaluations of 2024 and 2025 course deliveries. Final conclusions are expected in September 2025.
Behind the Tray – Food Science for School Meals Cooperative Agreement (formerly called Serving Up Science, an immersive Food Safety Education Program):
A new, enhanced, curriculum is currently under development for this science-based immersive education program, and the first course is scheduled to launch in August 2025. This is a two-year agreement.
Program Objective
The Food and Nutrition Service’s Food Safety Branch provides funding to support its mission of increasing awareness, visibility, and impact of food safety on USDA nutrition assistance programs.

Assistance may be used to conduct research or perform other tasks to benefit FNS nutrition assistance programs in the area of food safety. Eligible entities include universities and colleges that are publicly funded and operate under the auspices of state or regional governments, and private institutions of higher education

How to Apply
Award Procedure
All applications that meet the published deadline for submission will be screened for completeness and conformity to the requirements as announced in the RFA package. Grants are awarded by a competitive process via a technical review panel composed of FNS and other Federal staff that will meet to determine the technical merit of each grant application, provide a numerical score, and make recommendations to selecting officials. Non-solicited proposals may also be considered as funding allows.

Description
FAIR Health Food Allergy and Foodborne Illness Project – noncompetitive grant to FAIR Health, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, to provide a specific research project on pediatric foodborne illness and allergy medical data.
Behind the Tray – Food Science for School Meals cooperative agreement, is to develop and implement a week-long in-person science-based food safety education training program. The education program is designed to enhance the food science literacy of school nutrition professionals.
Food Safety – noncompetitive cooperative agreement to the Institute of Child Nutrition (ICN) to provide food safety education, training, and resources to child nutrition professionals.

Use of Funds
Allowed Uses
Funding is provided to a university or organization to achieve the objectives of the grant. The university or organization may award sub-grants to obtain the expertise and skills needed to accomplish the objectives. All costs proposed in the budget and detailed in the budget narrative must be allowable, reasonable, necessary, and allocable.
Restrictions
Equipment is generally an unallowable cost for these types of awards.
