Program description
NCI intends to release a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) that serves to continue the advancement and sustainment of informatics tools, software, and research resources that enable the acquisition, management, analysis, visualization, and interpretation of data across the cancer research continuum, including cancer biology, diagnosis and treatment, early detection, risk assessment and prevention, cancer control, and epidemiology. As a component of the NCI’s Informatics Technology for Cancer Research (ITCR) Program, this intended NOFO supports technologies that have progressed beyond initial prototyping and pilot development, demonstrate the potential for broad and significant impact in cancer research, and provide compelling reasons for further enhancement, optimization, dissemination, or sustainment.

FAQ
What types of informatics projects are eligible?
Projects must be beyond initial prototyping with demonstrated potential for broad impact. Examples include tools for data management, analysis, visualization, and interpretation across cancer research areas.
Who can apply for this grant?
Nonprofits, research institutions, universities, and other research-focused entities are eligible. Your organization should have infrastructure to develop and sustain informatics technology.
What is the funding amount?
Awards reach approximately $600,000. The total funding pool is $4,400,000, so multiple awards are expected.
Is cost sharing required?
No. Cost sharing is not a requirement for this cooperative agreement.
When is the deadline?
The deadline is June 11, 2027. This is a fixed deadline, not rolling.
💡 Tips for applicants
- Focus on demonstrable maturity: emphasize how your tool has moved beyond prototype stage and shows real-world impact or adoption. Include usage metrics or evidence of broader uptake.
- Address cancer research impact across multiple areas: map your technology to at least one cancer research area (biology, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, epidemiology, etc.) and explain concrete benefit.
- Plan for sustainment: NIH expects grantees to have a path forward for maintaining and improving tools beyond the grant period. Detail your long-term support strategy.
- Showcase optimization potential: explain what enhancements, features, or dissemination activities this grant will enable that wouldn't happen otherwise.
- Build realistic timelines: cooperative agreements involve close NCI collaboration, so be specific about milestones, deliverables, and communication checkpoints.
⚠️ Common mistakes
Proposing tools still in early prototype or pilot phase without evidence of broader use. NIH wants mature technologies ready to scale, not initial concept validation. Failing to demonstrate clear cancer research impact or adoption by current users. Vague sustainment plans that don't explain how the tool will survive beyond grant funding.
