FY2025 In Fiscal Year 2025, the Forest Service funded 121 projects across 34 states were funded to substantially expand and accelerate wood product and wood energy markets throughout the United States. 48 projects accelerate wood energy and innovation wood product markets including mass timber, biochar and advanced biofuels. 38 projects markets for small diameter or low value forest management byproducts. 34 projects support improved lumber manufacturing efficiency and capacity.

Program Objective

The USDA Forest Service, Wood Innovations program provides technical and financial assistance to strengthen the forest products industry and expand wood product and wood energy markets. These programs and projects address the nationwide challenge of restoring resilient forests for all landowners and reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires, disease, and infestations. The intent of the Wood Innovations funding opportunity is to stimulate, expand, and support U.S. wood products markets and wood energy markets to support the long-term management of National Forest System and other forest lands.

Objectives include:
1. Reduce hazardous fuels and improve forest health on National Forest System and other forest lands.
2. Reduce the costs of forest management on all land types. 3.Promote economic and environmental health of communities.

How to Apply

Award Procedure

Grants, if appropriated funds are provided, will generally be nationally competitive and merit-based. Upon award selection, recipients will work will Forest Service program managers and grants and agreements staff to finalize and execute agreements.

Decision Timeline

  • Approval: From 120 to 180 days

Range of Approval/Disapproval Time: 160 days after the date of closure on a Request for Proposals or Technical Assistance.

Matching Requirements

A 1:1 match is required. The applicants match must come from non-Federal sources. The match may include cash or in-kind contributions. All matching funds must be directly related to the proposed project. Letters for specific request from non-profits, local, state, and Tribal governments, business, companies, corporation, (for profit), institutions of higher education, and special purpose districts, (public utilities districts, fire districts, conservation districts, or port) are encouraged to demonstrate collaboration and the role this federal assistance program can leverage accomplishing local projects.
