Program Objective
The Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP) aims to provide funding and science delivery for studies associated with managing wildland fire, fuel, and fire-impacted ecosystems. It was established by Congress in 1998 and is a partnership of six federal agencies, including the USFS, BIA, BLM, NPS, USFWS, and U.S. Geological Survey. The program responds to the emerging needs of managers, practitioners, and policymakers from local to national levels. It stresses partnerships between scientists and managers, with special attention to getting results to the wildland fire community. JFSP supports collaboration among fire researchers, managers, academic professionals, and others working on similar or related projects, ensuring compatibility, efficiency, and mutually beneficial products while reducing redundant efforts. The program also provides access to the latest science through publications, webinars, workshops, field tours, discussion forums, and other activities that promote interactions between managers and researchers.

Description
The Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP) provides funding and scientific support to help land managers better understand and address wildland fire, hazardous fuels, and the recovery of fire‑affected ecosystems. Created by Congress in 1998, the program is a partnership among six federal agencies and is designed to meet the evolving needs of fire managers, practitioners, and policymakers at every level. JFSP emphasizes strong collaboration between scientists and on‑the‑ground managers to ensure research results are practical, accessible, and useful to the wildland fire community. The program also helps coordinate related research efforts to improve efficiency and reduce duplication. In addition to funding studies, JFSP shares the latest fire science through publications, webinars, workshops, field tours, and other activities that connect researchers and land managers and support informed decision‑making. Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), also known as Bipartisan Infrastructure Act (BIL), appropriated funds to be expended for Research and Development related projects, specifically Joint Fire Science related projects.

Allowed Uses
This assistance may be used to support the Forest Service’s Research and Development mission area to work at the forefront of science to improve the health and use of our Nation's forests and grasslands. Specifically R&D related project work that will support Joint Fire Science and the reduction of wildland fire risk.

Required Documentation
The partner must maintain current information in the System for Award Management (SAM) until receipt of final payment. This requires review and update to the information at least annually after the initial registration, and more frequently if required by changes in information. System for Award Management (SAM) means the Federal repository into which an entity must provide information required for the conduct of business as a Cooperative. Additional information about registration procedures may be found at the SAM Internet site (currently at https://www.sam.gov). Also, the partner must immediately inform the U.S. Forest Service if they or any of their principals are presently excluded, debarred, or suspended from entering into covered transactions with the Federal Government according to the terms of 2 CFR Part 180. Additionally, should the partner or any of their principals receive a transmittal letter or other official Federal notice of debarment or suspension, they shall notify the U.S. Forest Service without undue delay. This applies whether the exclusion, debarment, or suspension is voluntary or involuntary.
Matching Requirements
The Partner must contribute to the project with cash or non- cash contributions up to 20%.
