💡 Tips for applicants
- Contact your state's NFIP Coordinating Agency early to confirm eligibility and learn about your state's capacity assessment.
- Align your project plan with existing state flood mitigation strategies and National Flood Insurance Program rules.
- Build your cost-share plan now; federal funding typically covers 75% but requires state/local match commitment.
- Include letters of support from local governments, floodplain managers, and flood-prone communities you'll serve.
- Demonstrate how funds will build long-term capacity, not just fund one-time activities.
⚠️ Common mistakes
Applicants fail to secure adequate cost-share commitments before submission, making their budget unrealistic. Projects lack connection to state flood mitigation plans or NFIP compliance standards. Applications underestimate the complexity of NFIP regulations or lack technical expertise in floodplain management.
