Can you apply?

This grant is for research institutions and organizations seeking to develop and improve the Gabriella Miller Kids First Pediatric Data Resource Center. Eligible applicants must have expertise in data resource development, cloud-based computational analysis, and/or training in bioinformatics. This is a limited competition notice; applications are not currently being solicited.

Applicants should focus on expanding data sharing, improving cloud-based computational tools, and creating training programs for researchers without extensive bioinformatics experience. Collaborative projects combining data resource expertise with training and dissemination efforts are particularly encouraged.

The program supports research into childhood cancer and congenital anomalies, including discovery of shared genetic pathways. Clinical trials are not allowed under this funding mechanism.

Program description

The NIH Common Fund, with other NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs), intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications for the Gabriella Miller Kids First Pediatric Research Program (Kids First), which seeks to help researchers uncover new insights into the biology of childhood cancer and congenital anomalies, including the discovery of shared genetic pathways between these disorders, to understand the underlying mechanisms of disease and ultimately lead to more targeted therapies and interventions for patients and families. The program’s Limited Competition: Continued Development of the Pediatric Data Resource Center initiative will fund development and improvement of the Data Resource, with efforts to expand data sharing, training in cloud-based computational analysis, and facilitate data use by those in the research community that do not have extensive bioinformatics training. Applications are not being solicited at this time. Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. This NOFO will utilize the U2C activity code. Investigators with expertise and insights into this area of building and maintaining data resources and cloud-based computational analysis are encouraged to begin to consider applying for this new NOFO. In addition, collaborative investigations combining expertise in data resource and dissemination training will be encouraged and these investigators should also begin considering applying for this application.

FAQ

Can I apply right now for this grant?

No. This is a Notice of Intent only. Applications are not currently being solicited. The full NOFO will be released later, giving you time to develop collaborations and projects.

What types of projects are funded?

Funding supports development and improvement of the Data Resource, data sharing expansion, cloud-based computational training, and dissemination of data tools for researchers with limited bioinformatics training.

Are clinical trials allowed?

No. The U2C activity code explicitly excludes clinical trials from this funding opportunity.

What expertise should my team have?

Teams should include expertise in data resource development, cloud-based computational analysis, and/or bioinformatics training and dissemination. Collaborative applications combining these areas are encouraged.

When will the full application deadline be?

The current deadline is October 30, 2025. Watch for the official NOFO release from NIH for specific submission details and any subsequent deadlines.

💡 Tips for applicants

  • Start building collaborations now. Use this notice period to establish partnerships with co-applicants who have complementary data resource and training expertise.
  • Focus on accessibility. Emphasize how your data tools and training will help researchers without strong bioinformatics backgrounds use the data resource effectively.
  • Highlight data sharing innovation. Propose concrete plans for expanding data access, improving cloud-based infrastructure, or creating new computational workflows.
  • Plan for sustainability. Describe how your resource development efforts will be maintained and scaled beyond the funding period.
  • Review past Kids First awards. Examine previous projects funded through this program to understand NIH priorities and successful proposal approaches.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Submitting an application before the NOFO is officially released will result in desk rejection. Clinical trial proposals are ineligible under the U2C activity code. Proposals lacking clear plans for data dissemination and bioinformatics training are less competitive.
