💡 Tips for applicants

  • Identify your fiscal organization early. MDT requires a named organization to handle funds and reimbursements.
  • Use local data. Show crime statistics, traffic crash data, or survey results proving your community's impaired driving problem.
  • Demonstrate collaboration. Include letters of support from partner agencies, law enforcement, or community groups.
  • Keep projects focused. With $5,000 max, narrow scope to achievable activities with measurable outcomes.
  • Review MDT's Contract Manual. Understand allowable costs before budgeting. Not all expenses qualify for reimbursement.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Applications lack local data or fail to show the community's impaired driving problem. Projects don't align with Montana's Comprehensive Highway Safety Plan or existing DUI Task Force priorities. Budgets include ineligible expenses not covered by MDT's Contract Manual allowable expenditures.
