FAQ

Who can apply for this grant?

Organizations and institutions based in or operating in Djibouti can apply. All programs must include an American cultural element or connection with American experts or institutions.

What types of programs does the grant support?

Priority areas include entrepreneurship and STEM skills, English language acquisition, and job-readiness training. Programs must strengthen U.S.-Djibouti cultural ties and promote bilateral cooperation.

Are there any programs that are not eligible for funding?

Yes. The grant does not fund partisan political activity, charitable development, construction, religious programming, fundraising campaigns, lobbying, scientific research, or programs designed primarily for organizational growth.

What is the deadline and award timeline?

The deadline is April 12, 2024. Awards range from $5,000 to $25,000, and projects run 6 to 12 months, with an anticipated start date of October 2024.

Can we partner with an American organization or expert?

Yes—in fact, you must include an American cultural element or connection with American experts, organizations, or institutions. This is a core requirement of the program.

💡 Tips for applicants

  • Emphasize the American connection. Include details about how U.S. experts, organizations, or cultural elements are integrated into your program design.
  • Focus on youth audiences. The grant prioritizes young Djiboutians seeking employment or further education, especially those improving English language skills.
  • Align with priority areas. Programs in entrepreneurship, STEM innovation, English language, or job-readiness skills have the strongest chance of funding.
  • Keep programs focused and clear. Avoid proposals that appear to benefit your organization's internal growth rather than public diplomacy goals.
  • Propose realistic activities for 6–12 months. Be specific about what participants will learn and how the program advances U.S.-Djibouti cultural understanding.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Programs lack a clear American cultural element or connection with U.S. experts and institutions. Proposals that focus primarily on organizational growth or institutional development rather than public diplomacy goals fail review. Applicants miss the tight deadline (April 12, 2024) or submit poorly scoped activities that cannot be completed in 6–12 months.
