Program description
The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), as part of its stewardship of Congressionally-mandated activities under the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act (BPCA) and implementation of recommendations of the Task Force on Research Specific to Pregnant Women and Lactating Women (PRGLAC), intends to renew and publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications to promote translational and clinical research in pregnant women, lactating women, infants, children, and adolescents to: (1) advance precision medicine through the development, testing, and implementation of novel tools, models, and other technologies; (2) discover and develop novel therapeutics or enhance the usage of existing drugs for safer and more effective medications; (3) enhance patient-provider communications about drug effectiveness and safety risks; and, (4) optimize the dissemination, implementation, sustainment, and scale-up of evidence-based interventions to these patient populations. The overall goal is to improve safe and effective precision therapeutics during pregnancy, lactation, and across childhood. Applications are not being solicited at this time.

FAQ
What types of institutions can apply?
Research universities, medical centers, and nonprofit research institutions with established research infrastructure are most competitive. Some smaller nonprofits may apply if they have research capability and appropriate institutional affiliations.
What are the main focus areas?
Projects must address maternal and pediatric pharmacology through precision medicine, novel drug development, improved patient communication, or implementation of evidence-based interventions. Research must benefit pregnant women, lactating women, infants, children, or adolescents.
Is there a deadline for applications?
A Notice of Funding Opportunity has not yet been published. When released, the application deadline is expected on July 9, 2027. Monitor the NIH website for the official announcement.
What should competitive applications emphasize?
Strong applications show translational potential, feasibility of proposed methods, relevance to pediatric or maternal populations, and clear pathways to implementation. Interdisciplinary teams strengthen proposals.
What is the typical funding range?
Award amounts vary by project type and scope. Check the official NOFO when released for specific funding mechanisms and award ranges.
💡 Tips for applicants
- Review NIH R01, R21, and other mechanism requirements carefully when the NOFO is published. Different mechanisms have distinct requirements and competition levels.
- Establish collaborations with pediatric clinical centers or maternal health programs. Direct access to patient populations strengthens feasibility.
- Align your research question with BPCA priorities and PRGLAC recommendations. Clear connection to Congressional mandate improves competitiveness.
- Include a plan for dissemination or implementation. Translational research grants expect pathways beyond basic science findings.
- Budget for pilot data and preliminary studies if needed. NIH review panels favor applicants with evidence of research team capability.
⚠️ Common mistakes
Proposals that lack clear connection to pediatric or maternal populations often get rejected. Projects must demonstrate direct benefit to infants, children, adolescents, pregnant women, or lactating women. Weak preliminary data or insufficient feasibility evidence reduces competitiveness. Applicants underestimate timeline requirements for translational research phases.
