Program description
CDC announces the availability of fiscal year (FY) 2027 funds to implement CDC-RFA-DP-27-0072, Promoting Population Health through Increased Capacity in Alcohol Epidemiology and the Prevention of Excessive Alcohol Use. The purpose of this NOFO is to build state capacity in alcohol epidemiology and provide the tools and information needed to perform core public health functions related to excessive alcohol use prevention in states. This increased epidemiologic capacity will help build the public health infrastructure that is needed to reduce excessive alcohol use – a leading preventable cause of death in the U.S. The NOFO includes an additional component for the delivery of expert technical assistance and training on population-level evidence-based strategies for preventing excessive alcohol use and related harms in states and communities, such as those recommended by the Community Preventive Services Task Force. The period of performance is 5 years with a 12-month budget period and an anticipated award date of 8/31/2027.

💡 Tips for applicants
- Emphasize your state's current gaps in alcohol surveillance and epidemiologic capacity. Show what infrastructure you'll build.
- Highlight partnerships with community organizations, prevention programs, and universities. Demonstrate coordination across sectors.
- Include a realistic staffing plan with positions for epidemiologists and prevention specialists. Budget for training and technical assistance.
- Reference Community Preventive Services Task Force recommendations in your prevention strategy. This signals alignment with CDC guidance.
- Plan for sustainability beyond the 5-year award. Show how capacity will be maintained and integrated into ongoing operations.
⚠️ Common mistakes
Applicants underestimate the epidemiologic work required and vague about what specific surveillance systems will be built. States submit weak plans for maintaining new capacity after federal funding ends. Organizations lack evidence that they can coordinate across health departments and community partners effectively.
