Applicants must have documented maintenance responsibilities and be able to demonstrate financial and operational capacity to complete funded activities.
What is the application deadline?
The deadline is June 8, 2026, with applications accepted starting March 16, 2026. Applicants should plan to submit materials well before the deadline to ensure complete documentation.
What types of maintenance activities are supported?
Funding typically supports preventive maintenance, emergency repairs, building system upgrades, structural preservation, weatherization, roof replacement, and other activities that maintain facility functionality and safety.
How competitive is this program?
Competition varies by funding level and facility type. Applications with clear cost-benefit analysis, well-documented facility conditions, and demonstrated organizational capacity tend to be more competitive.
What is the typical funding range?
Award amounts depend on project scope and facility needs. DOI maintenance programs typically range from $10,000 to several hundred thousand dollars per award, though exact amounts vary by available appropriations.
💡 Tips for applicants
- Document your facility's current condition thoroughly with photos, assessments, and maintenance history. Strong baseline documentation strengthens your case for funding.
- Clearly connect proposed maintenance work to federal compliance requirements, safety standards, or building code violations to demonstrate necessity and urgency.
- Provide detailed cost estimates from qualified contractors or use GSA pricing schedules to show realistic budgeting and good stewardship of federal funds.
- Develop a realistic timeline for completion that accounts for procurement, permitting, and seasonal constraints relevant to your facility type and location.
- Demonstrate organizational capacity by documenting past successful facility management, staffing qualifications, and systems for tracking and reporting project outcomes.
⚠️ Common mistakes
Many applications underestimate project timelines or fail to account for permitting and procurement delays, leading to unrealistic schedules. Weak facility assessment data—missing condition reports, deferred maintenance backlogs, or safety documentation—makes it difficult for reviewers to justify funding. Applicants often submit vague cost estimates without supporting quotes or analysis, raising concerns about budget accuracy and financial management capability.
