Program description

The purpose of the NIOSH Support for Conferences and Scientific Meetings (U13) program is to support high-quality scientific meetings, conferences, and workshops that are relevant to the NIOSH mission and that promote occupational safety and health. The conference program is an important part of the NIOSH mission. Applications should address and advance research topics in occupational safety and health that align with NIOSH program priorities. A conference or scientific meeting is a gathering, symposium, seminar, workshop, or other organized meeting in which participants meet in person or virtually to coordinate, exchange, and share information or to explore and clarify a specific topic, problem, or area of knowledge. This cooperative agreement is used when substantial federal scientific or programmatic involvement is expected, and federal staff may assist, guide, coordinate, or participate in project activities before and after the award. Applications for training-only events will not be considered under this announcement.

💡 Tips for applicants

  • Clearly align your conference topic with NIOSH program priorities. Demonstrate how the meeting advances occupational safety and health research. Use NIOSH's strategic priorities as your guide.
  • Show active federal involvement potential. Explain how NIOSH staff can assist in planning, coordination, or participation. Describe specific roles federal partners could play.
  • Detail the participant value and outcomes. Explain what attendees will learn and how the conference advances the field. Specify expected attendance and participant mix.
  • Budget for essential meeting elements only. Focus on venue, speaker honorariums, materials, and necessary logistics. Justify all costs as directly supporting the conference mission.
  • Plan realistic timelines and evaluation. Show a clear pre-award and post-award timeline. Include metrics to evaluate meeting success and knowledge dissemination.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Applications lacking clear NIOSH mission alignment fail. Specify which NIOSH priorities your conference addresses. Training-focused events are rejected automatically. Ensure your meeting emphasizes research and knowledge exchange, not just training delivery. Underdeveloped federal involvement plans weaken applications. Describe concrete ways NIOSH staff will participate or contribute.
