Program description
The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for clinical audiologists currently enrolled in Ph.D. programs. NIDCD encourages audiologists with strong research potential to integrate clinical and translational research into their career paths. A strong research foundation is essential for advancing hearing health care and the field of audiology. The NIDCD Research Fellowship for Audiologists program aims to support this effort by providing clinical audiologists with the opportunity to engage in comprehensive and rigorous research training leading to a research doctorate (i.e., Ph.D.) in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences. Applications are not being solicited at this time. Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.

💡 Tips for applicants
- Start building your research network and mentor relationships now. Strong advisor support strengthens fellowship applications.
- Develop a clear research question that bridges clinical audiology practice and translational science. This integration is central to the program's mission.
- Demonstrate your commitment to advancing hearing health care through research. Show how your work benefits the audiology field.
- Document your clinical experience and training in audiology. This background differentiates you from other Ph.D. candidates.
- Draft a research proposal that is feasible within typical doctoral timelines. Reviewers want to see realistic, achievable goals.
⚠️ Common mistakes
Proposing purely theoretical research without clinical relevance or application. Fellowship prioritizes clinical-translational integration. Unclear connection between your background in audiology and your proposed research. Reviewers want to see how clinical experience informs your science. Weak research plan or underestimated scope for doctoral completion timeline. Be realistic about what you can accomplish.
