This grant is for county offices of education (COEs) and consortia in California supporting K-12 professional learning in mathematics, science, and computer science. A lead COE applies on behalf of a consortium serving grades 4–12 statewide. The grant funds professional development and family engagement activities aligned with California's Early Math Initiative and existing educator training programs.

The $50 million allocation supports one lead COE consortium operating statewide. Activities must advance teacher knowledge, instructional practice, and family involvement in STEM subjects. Applicants must demonstrate partnership capacity and commitment to building coherent statewide support systems.

Program description

Assembly Bill 185, Chapter 571, Statutes of 2022, Section 53 of the Education Omnibus Budget Trailer Bill for the 2022–23 California State Budget appropriated the sum of $85 million to allocate to county offices of education (COEs) to provide professional learning and support family engagement in mathematics, science, and computer science for pupils in preschool, transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, and grades one to twelve, inclusive. The Fresno County Superintendent of Schools will be allocated $35 million to support preschool, transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, and grades one to three, and augment the work of the existing Early Math Initiative (EMI). Fifty million dollars ($50,000,000) will be allocated to a lead COE to support a consortium that will provide professional learning and support family engagement in mathematics, science, and computer science for grades four through twelve, inclusive. The lead COE will partner with the EMI and collaborate with other state-sponsored and nonprofit mathematics, science, and computer science educator training initiatives to build a coherent and comprehensive system of statewide support for all children from birth to grade twelve, inclusive.
