This grant is for hydrogen fuel cell technology demonstrations at California ports. Projects must focus on locomotive and commercial harbor craft applications using hydrogen fuel cells. Two funding streams exist: one for technology integration and demonstration ($6.6M), and one for shared hydrogen fueling infrastructure ($6M). Projects must align with air pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals.
Applicants should include ports, fuel cell technology providers, transportation operators, and research institutions. Geographic scope is limited to California.

Program description
The purpose of this solicitation is to fund the design, integration, and demonstration of hydrogen fuel cell systems and hydrogen fueling infrastructure for locomotive and commercial harbor craft applications at California ports to reduce air pollutant and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The California Energy Commission’s (CEC) Natural Gas R&D Program announces the availability of up to $6.6 million in grant funds for the technology integration and demonstration of hydrogen fuel cell-powered locomotives and harbor craft. Additionally, the CEC’s Clean Transportation Program (formerly known as the Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program) announces the availability of up to $6 million in grant funds for shared hydrogen fueling infrastructure to support hydrogen fuel cell-powered locomotives or harbor craft, as well as on-road vehicles and cargo handling equipment.
