Who can apply for DURIP funding?

Accredited U.S. colleges and universities are eligible. For-profit organizations cannot apply. The institution must conduct research in areas important to national defense.

What can DURIP funds be used for?

Funds are strictly for acquiring research equipment or instrumentation. The equipment must support defense-relevant research and education of scientists and engineers.

What is the funding range?

Awards range from $50,000 to $7,000,000. Exact funding depends on equipment costs and research scope.

Is cost-sharing required?

No cost-sharing is required for DURIP. Federal funds cover eligible equipment costs without requiring institutional match.

When is the deadline?

The FY 2027 deadline is November 6, 2026. This is a fixed, non-rolling deadline.

💡 Tips for applicants

  • Align your equipment request with Air Force Scientific Research priorities. Review AFOSR research topic areas before proposing.
  • Justify how the equipment strengthens research capacity. Show how it enables new research directions or improves existing programs.
  • Provide detailed equipment specifications and cost justifications. Include quotes from vendors and explain why this specific equipment is necessary.
  • Demonstrate institutional commitment to the research area. Letters of support from department leadership and faculty help strengthen proposals.
  • Plan for long-term equipment sustainability. Address maintenance, training, and staffing needs beyond the grant period.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Vague alignment with DoD research priorities. Applicants fail to clearly connect proposed equipment to specific defense-relevant research areas.

Insufficient cost justification. Requesting expensive equipment without detailed quotes or explanation of necessity.

Forgetting the education component. Equipment must support scientist and engineer education, not just research.
