FAQ

Who can apply for DRRP funding?

Typically, eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) organizations, universities, research centers, disability organizations, and other entities with demonstrated research capacity and expertise in disability policy or rehabilitation. Applicants should have strong connections to the ADA National Network and disability community.

What types of projects does this program fund?

The program funds research projects that translate scientific evidence into actionable knowledge for the ADA National Network. This includes policy research, implementation science, data analysis, tool development, and dissemination activities that support ADA compliance and disability services improvement.

What is the typical project duration and funding range?

Project periods are typically multi-year (commonly 3-5 years), with annual funding varying based on project scope. Consult the specific RFP for exact funding caps, as federal rehabilitation research programs typically range from $150,000 to $500,000+ annually.

How competitive is this funding?

This is highly competitive federal research funding. Strong applications demonstrate significant research infrastructure, experienced personnel, partnerships with disability organizations, and clear plans for knowledge translation and dissemination to the ADA Network.

What happens after funding ends?

Projects are expected to have sustained impact beyond the funding period. Applicants should explain how research findings, tools, and resources will continue to benefit the ADA Network and disability community through partnerships, open-access resources, or adoption by existing systems.

💡 Tips for applicants

  • Establish strong partnerships with ADA Network entities and disability organizations early. Reviewers look for genuine collaboration with end-users who will actually implement the knowledge translation products.
  • Focus your research questions on practical problems that the ADA Network and disability advocates face. Abstract research without clear application to civil rights compliance or service improvement will struggle in review.
  • Develop a detailed knowledge translation and dissemination plan alongside your research methodology. Include specific strategies for reaching ADA Network partners, disability advocates, practitioners, and policymakers with your findings.
  • Use your project narrative to demonstrate your organization's track record with disability research and community engagement. Include letters of support from ADA Network partners and disability organizations that show buy-in for your approach.
  • Plan for sustainability and long-term impact beyond the grant period. Explain how research findings, tools, resources, or partnerships will continue to create value for disability services and ADA compliance after federal funding ends.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Applications often fail because they focus too heavily on research methodology while underestimating the complexity of knowledge translation. Reviewers need to see concrete, realistic plans for how research findings will actually reach and be used by ADA Network partners and disability organizations. Additionally, applications lacking strong partnerships with disability advocacy organizations and ADA Network entities tend to be less competitive—this program values co-created research that centers disability community priorities from the start.
