Program description

The purpose of the Congressionally mandated Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Program is to accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into treatments, diagnostics, and health interventions that improve patient and public health by funding and coordinating a national network of academic medical centers that provide the infrastructure, expertise, training, and collaboration needed to move discoveries from the laboratory into clinical practice and community health. The purpose of the reissuance of the CTSA Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to support a CTSA Hub that provides an integrated research and training environment for clinical and translational science and catalyzes the development, demonstration, and dissemination of methods and technologies that dramatically improve efficiency and quality across the translational research spectrum.

Awards are made under the authorization of Sections 301 and 405 of the Public Health Service Act as amended (42 USC 241 and 284) and under Federal Regulations 42 CFR Part 52 and 2 CFR Part 200.

This is a Forecast that will invite application(s) from eligible organization(s) to apply. Please see Eligibility Section for additional information. FAQ

Who is eligible to apply for a CTSA Hub award?

Academic medical centers and research institutions with capacity to build integrated clinical and translational science infrastructure. Your organization must be able to coordinate a regional research network.

Is this a one-time award or can it be renewed?

CTSA Hubs typically receive multi-year funding with renewal opportunities. Awards support sustained networks and long-term infrastructure development.

What activities does the CTSA support?

Infrastructure development, research training, methods development, technology dissemination, and coordination of clinical and translational research across institutions.

When is the application deadline?

The fixed deadline is January 25, 2027. Typically applications open 4-6 weeks before the deadline.

What budget categories are allowed?

Salaries, equipment, facilities, training stipends, and indirect costs are typically allowable. Consult the full NOFO for detailed budget guidance.

💡 Tips for applicants

  • Start by reviewing the full NOFO carefully. The reissued notice may have new requirements or structural changes from previous CTSA cycles.
  • Emphasize your institution's existing clinical and translational research capacity. Reviewers assess your baseline infrastructure and partnerships.
  • Develop a clear strategic plan showing how your Hub will serve your region and contribute to the national network goals.
  • Engage collaborating institutions early. Strong inter-institutional partnerships are critical for a competitive Hub application.
  • Budget generously for infrastructure and coordination staff. CTSA Hubs require dedicated personnel to manage the network.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Applications lack clear focus on translational research mission. Weak institutional partnerships or unclear regional network structure. Insufficient detail on infrastructure, training programs, or methods dissemination plans.
