Can you apply?

This grant is for established research institutions seeking to lead multidisciplinary research centers on child sexual abuse prevention and health outcomes. Applicant institutions must have demonstrated capacity to support collaborative, large-scale research through the P50 center grant mechanism. The program supports research focusing on CSA prevention, intervention efficacy, longitudinal health studies, biological mechanisms, and data infrastructure development nationally.

Eligible research includes intervention efficacy studies, longitudinal investigations of chronic disease outcomes, biological embedding research, and CSA data infrastructure projects. A translation component demonstrating public health impact is required. The multicomponent structure emphasizes collaboration across disciplines and institutions.

Program description

This renewal of the CAPSTONE Centers for Child Maltreatment Research initiative will focus on child sexual abuse (CSA), a preventable but understudied public health problem with serious lifelong consequences. CSA is linked to adverse developmental and health outcomes, including chronic gynecological, gastrointestinal, sexual health, and mental health conditions.  The renewed Centers are intended to overcome the significant practical, ethical, and methodological challenges in CSA research, addressing critical gaps in CSA research and including a required translation component. The multicomponent and collaborative nature of the P50 mechanism will create national resources for the field supporting innovative, high-quality research including : (1) studies evaluating the efficacy and effectiveness of interventions; (2) longitudinal studies of CSA-related chronic disease outcomes; (3) research on biological embedding and its health implications; and (4) projects that strengthen CSA data infrastructure.  Instead of just identifying general risk factors and etiology, the renewed Centers will focus on prevention and translational research to demonstrate measurable public health impact.  Grant authorities that allow the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to forecast this opportunity are as follows: 42 U.S.C. 281 (Sec. 401); 42 U.S.C. 285g (Sec. 448); 42 USC 284h (Sec. 409D)

FAQ

Who can apply for CAPSTONE Center grants?

Research institutions with capacity to manage large collaborative centers. Typically universities, medical schools, and research institutes with established child health research programs apply.

What is the P50 mechanism?

The P50 is a center grant supporting multidisciplinary, collaborative research. It requires multiple research components and a translation/dissemination element.

What research areas does this grant support?

CSA intervention efficacy studies, longitudinal health outcome research, biological embedding studies, and CSA data infrastructure projects. All must address child sexual abuse prevention or health impact.

Is there a cost-sharing requirement?

No cost-sharing is required for this grant. However, institutional commitment to the research mission is expected.

When is the deadline?

The fixed deadline is October 1, 2027. No rolling deadlines or multiple submission dates apply.

💡 Tips for applicants

  • Build a strong, multidisciplinary team across departments and institutions. Single-institution applications are weaker than collaborative networks.
  • Include a concrete translation/dissemination component showing how research findings will reach practitioners and policymakers.
  • Propose longitudinal or mechanistic studies, not just descriptive research. NIH prioritizes hypothesis-driven, innovative approaches.
  • Address CSA prevention and public health impact explicitly. Purely academic research without practical applications ranks lower.
  • Demonstrate institutional support through letters and commitment to provide core facilities, staff, and protected research time for the team.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Focusing only on risk factors without proposing preventive interventions or solutions. Failing to include a translation component demonstrating measurable public health impact. Submitting single-investigator or single-discipline applications instead of building collaborative, multidisciplinary research teams.
