Program description
This award aims to strengthen immunization programs in priority countries so they can better prevent, control, and eliminate/eradicate vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) like polio, measles, and rubella, reduce illness and death from these diseases, and respond to emerging global health threats.
The Recipient will build stronger systems in priority countries to prevent, detect, and respond to VPDs. This includes improving immunization services, strengthening VPD surveillance, and expanding the capacity to prepare for and manage outbreaks. The Recipient will also create and carry out targeted approaches to reach high-risk groups who are un- or under-immunized. Additionally, the Recipient will promote long-term sustainability of immunization programs–such as supporting evidence-based decisions through National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups (NITAGs)–and enhance program evaluation to increase impact. The Recipient will manage and coordinate Pakistan’s National Stop Transmission of Polio (NSTOP) program and assist countries facing polio outbreaks or at high risk for them. This agreement may also support other global health priorities aligned with CDC goals.

💡 Tips for applicants
- Clearly articulate your organization's capacity to work in priority countries and with Ministry of Health partners. Include relevant international experience and local partnerships.
- Focus your proposal on sustainable systems strengthening rather than short-term activities. Show how your work will persist beyond the grant period.
- Align your activities with current CDC priorities in immunization and polio elimination. Reference specific VPDs and regions the CDC emphasizes.
- Include robust evaluation plans that measure program impact on immunization coverage, disease detection, and outbreak response capacity.
- Demonstrate how you will reach high-risk, underimmunized populations. Include culturally appropriate strategies and community engagement approaches.
⚠️ Common mistakes
Proposing activities limited to a single country without regional or systems-level impact. Failing to address sustainability and long-term capacity building beyond the grant period. Lack of strong partnerships with in-country ministries of health and local stakeholders.
