💡 Tips for applicants

  • Contact your BJA program officer early if you received an invitation letter. Clarify eligibility and funding expectations before drafting your proposal.
  • Focus your proposal on specific capacity-building needs and measurable outcomes for your forensic science program.
  • Emphasize innovative approaches to forensic training, technology adoption, or information-sharing across criminal justice partners.
  • Use data from your current grant program to demonstrate impact and justify the need for technical assistance and enhancement.
  • Build in clear metrics and evaluation plans to show how the funding will improve forensic science practice and quality.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Applicants submit applications without receiving a formal BJA invitation letter—this is an automatic disqualifier. Proposals lack specific metrics showing how training or technical assistance will improve forensic science outcomes. Applicants fail to connect their request to capacity-building for their existing forensic science grant programs.
