💡 Tips for applicants

  • Clearly document your status as an active BJA COSSUP grantee. Include proof of current award in your application.
  • Focus your proposal on specific operational challenges your organization faces. Be concrete about what assistance will improve outcomes.
  • Demonstrate experience delivering training or technical assistance in substance use response or criminal justice settings.
  • Build your budget around realistic costs for trainer time, materials, travel, and evaluation activities.
  • Connect your technical assistance plan directly to BJA's goals for reducing overdose deaths and improving response capacity.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Applicants often fail to clearly establish current COSSUP grant status, causing immediate rejection. Vague descriptions of specific operational challenges or generic training plans lack the detail BJA expects. Many budgets underestimate evaluation and outcome measurement costs, which are critical for federal programs.
